INTRODUCTION

The IIT Madras Department of Management Studies (DoMS) was formed in 2004. The department's vision is “To be recognized as India’s best-in-class business school in emerging knowledge domains of management, with expanding global reach through effective engagement with academia, industry, government, and other relevant stakeholders.”  It has a faculty strength of 26, spanning the functional areas of Human Resources, Finance, Information Systems and Technology Management, Integrative Management.  Marketing, Operations and Manufacturing. DoMS research and teaching programs have earned widespread acclaim.  The MBA program emerged among one of the bests in India within a decade of its launch. It attained NIRF ranking 10 in the year 2022. The knowledge and expertise of the Department’s faculty members are highly sought after by Businesses, Industry, Government, and NGOs. In the area of Operations and Manufacturing Management, the faculty is rated among the top 50 worldwide and No.1 in India.

With a distinct focus on research, in the past 5 years, the Department has graduated more than 150 Research Scholars through its Ph.D. and MS (by Research) programs.  Nearly 600 papers have been published in leading international journals, with more than 20% in “A*” or “A” quality journals (as per the standard ABDC journals classification).  DoMS has flourishing MOUs with reputed foreign Institutions and Management Schools that facilitate student exchanges (about 40 each year, inbound and outbound), faculty research, and project collaborations.  Joint doctorate degree programs with the University of Passau, the University of Duisberg-Essen (Germany), Swinburne University of Technology (Australia) and Curtin University (Australia) are some of the highlights of the MOUs. On average, 15 executive development programs and 4 faculty development programs are conducted annually.  Since its inception, the MBA program has secured 100% placement of graduates in top-class multinational and national organizations. Two-year Executive MBA program for working professionals, a TechMBA program, and a Dual Degree Quantitative Finance Program for B.Tech students have been launched successfully.

The stated goals of DoMS for the next 5 years are to:

* Maintain high academic standards by updating the curriculum to embrace digital transformation. New courses will emphasize digital competencies, data analysis, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain. The Dept. will begin offering online certification programs, democratizing quality education globally and making ‘IITM for all’ motto a reality.
* Invest in modern infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories, and recreational spaces, to create an engaging and conducive learning environment.
* Foster a global perspective by expanding international partnerships, exchange programs, and study-abroad opportunities.
* Drive collaborative research for tangible societal and business outcomes—pioneering interdisciplinary impact.
* Elevate MBA and Executive MBA programs for global leadership readiness over the next five years.
* Offer more industry specific interdisciplinary customized programs.
* Recruit 15 regular faculty, establish Chairs, recruit at least 6 Professors of Practice per area, and adjunct faculty in each area fostering academic brilliance and innovation.
* Establish an indigenous Case Center to foster the culture of case writing and case teaching.

A Peer Review Committee report on DoMS highlighted the need for the Department to “rise to the next higher level of reputation” by establishing excellence in one or more focus areas and recommended accepting a large donation for this purpose. This proposal has been formulated in line with the Committee’s view.
