Avishkar Hyperloop is the student team of IIT Madras, doing indigenous design and development for building the First ever Self Propelled, Completely Autonomous Hyperloop Pod of India. They work at Centre for Innovation (CFI), IIT Madras - with the vision to develop a new mode of high-speed transportation for the Indian Subcontinent. They are integrating innovative technologies to reduce the time spent by people to travel across cities and thus, open up new avenues of development, for the Indian economy.
The International Hyperloop Pod Competition is organised by SpaceX to challenge various student teams from across the globe to develop the fastest transport pod. In this global competition, the final round (testing and evaluation of the actual prototype), takes place at the SpaceX Headquarters in Hawthorne, California, USA where they have constructed a 1-mile long vacuum tube/Hyperloop track. The fastest pod with successful deceleration wins the competition!
Team Avishkar Hyperloop was formed in Sept ’17, and in its debut attempt at the competition, was among one of the TOP 47 teams globally out of more than 1600 teams participated. Three members from the team went to SpaceX, California to witness the competition in July’18.
In their 2nd attempt at the Competition, after interviews by SpaceX and rigorous design reviews by Prof. S. R. Chakravarthy and T. M. Muruganandam of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, they are among the top 22 teams globally and have qualified for building the functional prototype of our hyperloop Pod, to compete with other teams. Also, they are the only INDIAN team to achieve this feat.
The total cost of developing the pod and its logistics amounts to INR 1.2Cr.
