Dear Fellow IITian
On May 11, 2011, three Alumni of Indian Institute of Technology Madras Alumni Association of North America (IITMAANA) proposed to establish an Endowment fund to institute Chairs in the names Professors, Pioneers, and Architects of the Institute to honor their services to the students and the Institute. The Board has unanimously approved the creation of an Endowment Chair in name of late Prof.S.Sampath at IIT Madras. With the help of the OAA, Head of EE Department and the Deans of Administration and Academic Research, the IIT Madras Senate approved the proposal on July 12, 2011. Director, Dr. M. S. Ananth will make the announcement of the Chair on the Alumni Day on July 23, 2011.
The purpose of the Fund, which is part of the Golden Jubilee fund, is to provide a sustainable way to institute Chairs in the name of Professors who had made a profound impact on the students. The Fund allows the alumni to show their immense respect to honor the memory of the Professors in a small way.
The plan is to initiate the process to institute Endowment Chairs and they have identified several nominations from the early set of faculty members:
- Prof. B. Sengupto, Director
- Dr. P. C. Vergheese (Civil Engineering)
- Dr. P. Venkata Rao (Electrical)
- Dr. E. G. Ramachandran (Metallurgy)
- Prof. Koch (Physics)
- Prof. Sheer (Machine Design)
- Dr. M. V. C. Sastri (Chemistry)
- Prof. S. Sampath, Deputy Director
- Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (Mechanical)
- Dr. D. Venkateswarlu (Chemical)
- Dr. S. Rama Seshan (Physics)
- Prof. Kahn (Mathematics)
- Dr. C. Rama Sastry (Physics)
- Prof. R. Krishnamurthy (Humanities)
More names will be added as the IITM hears from other alumni. The launch of Dr. M. S. Ananth Endowment Fund on June 1, 2011 is an example of the alumni desires to honor the Professor/Director who have made profound impact on the students as well as to the Institute.
The Endowment Chair initiative represents a small token of the appreciation of the Professors efforts in shaping the Institute and the alumni. The plan is to honor the Professors from 1960s - 2011 with an appropriate nomination and selection process once in two years so that in ten to twelve years the backlog can be completed.
Mr. Mallik Putcha, Dr. S. Pasupathy, and Dr. Subba Viswanathan proposed to institute an Endowment Chair in the name of Prof. S. Sampath, First Deputy Director and Professor of Electrical Engineering (Light Current) for his significant contributions to educate his students, to develop the Electrical Engineering Department in general and to grow the Institute at large.
Prof. S. Sampath (1925-1998) has made very significant contributions to engineering education in India at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur. He has restructured the recruitment and assessment system in Defence Research and Development Organization. He was a very active contributor to professional societies such as the Indian Society for Technical Education, Computer Society of India, and Institute of Electronics and Telecommunucation Engineers. He has played a prominent role in government policy formulation (e.g., electronics commission, software policy).
The plan is to raise the funds to the level of $350K or more from the individual and the corporate donors to support the initiative by December 31, 2011. This is the first of such initiatives being proposed by alumni based in North America and around the world to honor the Alma mater Professors.
The Committee expects that funds will be realized by the end of this year, 2011 and a formal announcement of the Chaired Professor will be made by April 16, 2012, which will mark the eighty-seven birthday of respected Prof. S. Sampath.
We request contributions of Rs 10,000 - Rs 50,000 or more from India based citizens and US$ $500 - $50000 or more from overseas residents.
We are also approaching the Corporations and Foundations around the world to honor Prof. Sampath's contributions in the field of engineering education and electronics and software policy.
