Prof.S.Sampath Institute Chair
Classmates and Fellow Alumni:
It is a great honor to inform you that Prof. S. Sampath Endowment Fund got rejuvenated when Mallik had the opportunity to contribute $ 50K to the IIT Madras Foundation and $ 2.5 K to IITMAANA on June 1, 2016 to Seshan Rammohan and Sagar Pushpala respectively in the presence of our fellow alumnus, Prasad Vepa (see photo at the bottom). We started Prof. Sampath Endowment initiative formally on July 23, 2011, conducted a Distinguished Lecture by Dr.Sidney Burrus, Professor and former Dean of Engineering, Rice University on April 16, 2014, and now have an opportunity to establish the Institute Chair in October 2016.
See More..Currently, the Endowment Fund has a balance of ~ Rs. 43 Lakhs ($ 64 K) with your previous contributions plus few recent pledges towards the required Goal of Rs. 50 Lakhs ($ 77K) by September 30, 2016. We need to raise Rs. 7-10 Lakhs to allow IIT Madras announcement of Prof. Sampath Institute Chair by Ides of October, 2016. Prof. Nagarajan suggested a brief function at our Annual Reunion Day, December 26, 2016. We have suggested an honoring event on Prof. Sampath's Ninety Second Birthday, April 16, 2017.
The purpose of this note is to seek and to encourage the students of Prof. Sampath at IIT Madras, IISc, IITK, and Sathya Sai Institute to honor the Gem of Man who had moulded and crafted us to be excellent engineers and citizens of the World. Prof S. Sampath was one of the most respected technology leaders who was widely recognized for his knowledge in Information and Communication Technology. My friendship and interaction with him grew significantly when he became the First Chairman of the Recruitment and Assessment Centre (RAC) at DRDO. During his Chairmanship of the RAC, he evolved and established an impartial methodology and set of guidelines for the benefit of DRDO as an Organization and also to the employees in particular.

"Prof. Sampath was one of the noted pioneers who developed I. I. T, Madras during its years. Joining the Institute in 1961 as a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Head of the Department of its Light Current Division, he took a leading role in the development of the laboratories and courses in the area of Electronics and Communication Engineering.
He rendered yeoman service to the Institute particularly as its first Deputy Director and in several other administrative roles as the Head of the E. E. Department, Head of the Centre for Systems and Devices, Head of the Computer Centre, Head of the Central Electronics Centre. He earned the approbations of staff and students by his warmth and his desire to help in whatever way he could.
Prof. Sampath was an eloquent speaker who charmed his audience by his command of English and felicity of his delivery. Students enjoyed and benefitted from his lectures by his clarity of thought and presentation.
He will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind and gentle person, who gave his very best and contributed to the growth and development of the Institute in many ways.
I congratulate IITMAANA on their proposal to set up a Chair in IIT Madras in his name and wish this endeavor a great success."

"Prof. Sampath was a dedicated teacher and one of the most committed educationists that IIT Madras was fortunate to have on its rolls.
Prof. Sampath was a Deputy Director for a decade in IIT Madras and was, apart from being an able administrator and an outstanding orator, a remarkable human being. His concern for the welfare of the students and his kindness in dealing with them without compromising the interests of the faculty and staff made him a person who was loved and respected by all. Indeed he lived by the diction "Paropaharartham Idam Sareeram".
I was fortunate to interact with him on several occasions after I joined IIT Madras in 1972 and on a few occasions again after he became Director, IIT Kanpur. Madras's loss was Kanpur's gain. He was always very warm and friendly and never pulled rank on young faculty.

"I heard of Professor Sampath when I joined the Intermediate class in Loyola College - he had obtained the First Rank the previous year with distinctions in all subjects. I joined the IISc the year he left - so I missed him both at Loyola and at the IISC. He became Assistant Professor at the IISc the year I left the IISc. Thus, I missed him once again.
During the latter part of his career as Director at IIT Kanpur, I used to meet him often and he was my colleague Director.
Professor Sampath was famous for his wonderful command of the English language and for his elucidation of the subject in his classes. A wonderful human being; it was a privilege to have known him."

"Prof. Sampath is a gentleman to a fault. Being a voracious reader and a scholar, his eagerness and penchant to deliver and impart that knowledge to students and public is almost infectious. His erudition many times came in his way making judgements in issues posed to him. When he was offered the post of Directorship of IIT Kanpur, he asked me (like he might have asked many others) for advice whether he should accept the offer. Those were the days when IITK was in a highly militant mood of indiscipline and disorder. I told him, "Please accept the post but you should be fair and firm." I do not know what he felt about the advice; he accepted and came over to IIT Kanpur. He faced many administrative problems both in academics and administration. He tried to be fair, but he found it difficult because he felt that that there is reason on both sides which made him agree with opposite view points. Fairness and firmness did not match in his case.
He was great devotee of Satya Sai Baba and was appointed Vice Chancellor of Satya Baba University. He was in his element, kind, devout, and scholarly. When we sought Swami's blessings for my heart operation and when my wife approached him, he was kind enough to speak to Swami and brought his blessings.
Generous and always helpful, he left a mark on the minds and hearts of people who knew him. May his tribe increase for the good of society."

"I do remember fondly Professor S. Sampath. I had joined this Institute in his leadership. He was very gentle and very good in English and we remember him as a champion debater in his college days. I did not attend any Senate meetings (I was not a Professor then) but my senior colleagues told me about his fluent style of conducting Senate meetings. He was very patient in meetings with the workers and I remember a meeting of Council of Wardens where he played a pivotal role in breaking a deadlock between students and mess workers. I was a Warden of Hall I then."

"I have the pleasure of being acquainted with Prof S. Sampath from the time he was in IIT Madras. I always felt that he was sincere and straight forward in interacting with others. His command of English was superb. His only weakness was that he trusts every one, which may not always be correct. My friendship and interaction with him significantly increased from the time he became Director of IIT Kanpur at a time of disturbances in the campus. His sincerity in discussions with the Union of employees did not help much.
After Directorship of IIT Kanpur and a stint as Member of UPSC he was he became Director of newly established Recruitment and Assessment Centre (RAC) of DRDO. He raised its standards and maintained the confidentiality needed. Whenever I was a Member of his Board, I always felt that the candidate felt satisfied that sufficient time was spent with him and that the Board was fair to him by asking questions that are relevant to the candidate's work. Often he used to ask the candidate as the Chairman of the Board, whether he was satisfied.
I had a wonderful time when under his overall supervision, I went to University of Malaysia in Kaula Lumpur to teach a course in Fiber Optics communications emphasizing practical aspects. He richly deserves to be remembered and honoured by establishing a Chair in IIT MADRAS in his honour."
