Description
To know his contribution to future generations, just look around the campus
Independent India had a herculean challenge ahead, it was about building the educational arena of the country. One of the forerunners in building the education system in India, is Dr. B Sengupto. He was appointed as the secretary for a 22 member high level committee which was formed to govern education in Republic of India and IIT Madras was formally inaugurated in 1959. Dr. B SenGupto, then Assistant Educational Adviser, Govt. of India, was appointed as the first director of IIT Madras. He hadpreviously served as the Principal, Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, Bombay.
Since the time he occupied the office, he has been one of the real architects of IITM. Due to his untiring efforts, the institute rose to the heights of glory both in India and abroad. His contribution to the growth of the institute, from its very formative stage to the height of excellence, is inenarrable. Being the Secretary of the Sarkar committee, he knew the ins and outs of the Govt. recommendations and developed the institute accordingly. During his tenure, in 1961, IIT Madras was declared as Institution of National importance by the Parliament of India.
His life stands as an illustration of his own words "March on with determined steps without any fear or fatigue".
We take the privilege to Honour the founding father of IIT Madras, by way of launching an Institute chair under his name, as Dr. B SenGupto Institute Chair. We take this opportunity to appeal to our alumni to contribute abundantly towards this endeavour.
