Water pollution is a prime concern in Chennai. But, steps to remedy are disabled by lack of adequate data. IITM’s recent investigation of groundwater in Tondiarpet and Perungudi dumpsites detected the presence of carcinogenic particles. Since groundwater caters to most of the domestic and industrial needs, it is imperative to determine the extent of contamination and strategies for remediation quickly, while keeping in mind the parameters of groundwater quality, contaminant movement, extent of pollution, and water quality parameters exceeding recommended levels.
To develop a database on groundwater composition towards tackling and remedying ground water pollution.
