In Conversation with Mr. Venkat Rangan: A Journey Through Time and Technology

Mr. Venkat Rangan (1981/BT/ME), a distinguished alumnus of IIT Madras, and is a pioneer in the field of technology of the past 30 years. From his journey at IIT Madras to his experiences in the tech industry, this conversation with him provides an engaging glimpse into his remarkable career and thoughts on the future of technical education in India.

A Journey Back in Time: Nostalgia and Memories

The interview commenced with a warm welcome and congratulatory note on his recent accolades, including the DAA award and the inauguration of the Wind Energy Center. When asked how it feels to return to IIT Madras, he expressed a deep sense of nostalgia and connection.

"Every time I come back to IIT Madras, I feel a strong connection. The environment brings back memories of my time here, which were some of the best years of my life," Venkat Rangan, reminisced. He highlighted the long-lasting relationships he built during his five years at the institute and how these connections continue to enrich his life to this day.

Embracing Social Media to Reconnect with Batchmates

The conversation then shifted to how technology helped him stay in touch with his batchmates. He noted a period of about 20 years where connecting was sparse, but with the advent of social media platforms like WhatsApp, reconnections have flourished.

"Social media has helped us reconnect with batchmates we had lost touch with. It's about catching up on the time lost and maintaining the bond. Additionally, dedicated members in our batch work tirelessly to ensure everyone stays connected," he shared, highlighting the efforts of his batchmates in fostering these connections.

Career Transitions: From Mechanical Engineering to Computer Science

Diving into his professional journey post-IIT Madras, he discussed how he transitioned from Mechanical Engineering to Computer Science. Driven by a keen interest in computing, a decision was made to pursue a Master’s in Computer Science, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the software industry.
Visionary Behind the Wind Energy Center

"I found that the IIT brand name had significant weight, helping me secure leadership roles and work with the right group of people. My experience ranges from startups to larger companies, eventually co-founding and leading successful ventures," he elaborated, emphasizing the importance of continual learning and adaptability in one’s career.

One of the highlights of the interview was discussing his vision for the newly inaugurated Wind Energy Center at IIT Madras. His fascination with wind energy began as early as 2016, understanding the complementary role it plays alongside solar energy in a clean energy portfolio.

"When I researched, I found a gap in fundamental research in wind energy at IIT Madras and across India’s institutions. This presented a prime opportunity to focus on wind energy and contribute significantly to the growing field," Mr. Venkat explained. His commitment to clean energy led to the establishment of the center, aiming to bring in industry partners and drive academic research.

Reflections on Technical Education in India

The discussion also touched upon the current state of technical education in India. While acknowledging the increased number of IITs and private engineering colleges filling the gap between demand and supply, he emphasized the importance of making quality technical education accessible to all students.

"Those who don't make it through JEE should still have access to good technical education. They are equally capable of contributing at the same level," he stressed. Venkat, also noted the role of IIT Madras in making educational material available through online platforms, facilitating broader access to quality education.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Technologists

With over 30-plus years in the tech industry, his advice to aspiring technologists is invaluable. He emphasized the importance of focus, producing good work, and effective communication within a team.
"Focus on producing good work, and management will recognize it. Learn to communicate effectively, especially in large company settings, and always be prepared to let go of older technologies and upskill with newer ones," Venkat said.

A Noble Mission: IITM for All

In closing, he expressed strong support for Professor Kamakoti's mission of "IITM for All," aiming to make IIT Madras's resources available to every eligible student in India. “It's a very noble and important mission. For a country of our size, we need all the avenues available for anyone who has the drive.” added Mr. Venkat.

This initiative resonates deeply with his belief in providing opportunities for driven individuals to access quality technical education, regardless of their background.

This insightful conversation with Mr. Venkat Rangan, was both inspiring and enlightening. His reflections on the past, insights into the present, and vision for the future serve as a guiding light for current students and professionals alike. As he aptly put it, having the drive to learn and staying connected with the evolving world of technology are keys to success.
