Introduction:
International focus on robotics research has been gaining popularity over the last few decades, and it has reached a frenzied involvement from various quarters in the last few years. This has led to what is often heralded as the revolution in Machine learning and Artificial intelligence. There are many academic institutes and industrial houses involved in research and development in robotics. Interdisciplinary robotics research and team projects have shown tremendous impact in developing new technologies and products. Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotic Institute (https://www.ri.cmu.edu/), Edinburg Centre for Robotics (https://www.edinburgh-robotics.org/) are examples for such focussed research centres in robotics. The recent efforts by the robotic researchers from various departments at IIT Madras have resulted in the introduction of an interdisciplinary dual degree program in Robotics.
IITM is proposing to establish a Centre of excellence in Telerobotics. The Centre of Excellence in Robotics at IIT Madras is expected to address an important need of having a focussed research centre for telerobotics. Being in a futuristic application domain, the CoE will focus on developing technologies and products which will have deep impact on the technological status of the country. With the support from the academic strength of IITM, it is possible to make this centre an internationally recognised research facility.
