Description
Vannam is the student-run LGBTQIA+ sensitisation and support collective of IIT Madras. Founded in 2014, it has grown from a small, informal peer network into an officially recognised Independent Student Body (ISB). As of December 2025, Vannam also serves as a member of the institute’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity Committee.
Our mission is to build an informed, empathetic and inclusive campus by challenging ignorance and queerphobia, while creating a safe, affirming space for students to express themselves authentically. Vannam works through a combination of advocacy, sensitisation, community building and cultural engagement.
Our key initiatives include:
Vanavil Equality Summit – IIT Madras’ annual queer festival, featuring panel discussions, filmscreenings, art exhibitions and interactive workshops on mental health, legal rights and queer Culture.
Institute Pride Parade – A landmark event celebrating visibility and solidarity on campus.
Representation & Advocacy – We communicate with the IITM administration to represent the interests and concerns of LGBTQIA+ students, helping shape policies and institute-level initiatives.
Awareness & Outreach – Through our social media, student magazine and regular campaigns, we promote dialogue on LGBTQIA+ issues among students, faculty, and allies across the campus community and beyond.
Over the years, these efforts have meaningfully shifted the cultural landscape on campus, encouraging openness, allyship and institutional support.
