Class of 1974! Celebrating 50 Years at IIT Madras

IIT Madras pulsated with excitement as the class of 1974 returned for their 50th golden reunion. The place thrummed with nostalgia, camaraderie, and a shared sense of pride in their alma mater's remarkable journey. The event transcended a mere reunion, transforming into a landmark occasion marked by the inauguration of the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, signifying the institute's unwavering commitment to innovation and progress.

Evoking Nostalgia and Celebrating Progress

Mr. Kaviraj Nair, CEO, OIA, warmly welcomed the alumni, emphasizing the dual significance of the occasion: reconnecting with cherished bonds and witnessing the momentous launch of the Wadhwani School. “Today is a momentous occasion in the Journey of IIT Madras and today we are also going to witness the birth of the ‘Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.’ This resonated deeply, underscoring the event's ability to bridge past and present.

Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, then takes the stage. Commenting on the occasion, Professor V. Kamakoti said, “50th year is very important as there's an audit for the institution for how we have shaped your career what sort of foundation that we had laid to you 50 years before and how it is basically manifesting itself it's very important feedback that as an Institute we are getting in every reunion we listen to many experiences and that actually focuses us on what we are doing.”

A Glimpse into the Future of AI

Professor B. Ravindran,  HoD, Department of Data Science and AI, IIT Madras, offers an insightful overview of cutting-edge research happening at IIT Madras. He emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the field and highlights collaborative efforts across various centers, including the Robert Bosch Center for Data Science and AI and the Center for Responsible AI.  “We have launched many collaborative initiatives not just research centers but also we have multiple Innovative programs on data science and AI involving people from various expertise.” said,  Prof. Ravindran. He also sheds light on research across crucial sectors like healthcare, finance, and smart cities, while sharing the impact of collaborations with leading organizations and industry bodies.

From IITM Student to Visionary: The Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI

Mr. Sunil Wadhwani, a distinguished alumnus and the driving force behind the Wadhwani School, delivered the inaugural address. “25 years ago, I started working with some NGS thanks to them. I traveled to remote parts of India spoke with people in villages sat on the floor tried to understand what the issues were and what could be done better finally many years later. I said let me just start my own I had some ideas about how to apply innovative technology to improving Primary Healthcare, particularly for low-income communities so I started the Wish Foundation,” said, Mr. Sunil Wadhwani.

He expressed his profound gratitude to IIT Madras and outlined his vision for utilizing AI for social good, particularly in healthcare and education. Mr. Wadhwani's commitment resonated with the ethos of the Wadhwani Institute for AI, showcasing its impactful solutions in areas like early tuberculosis detection and improved maternal health. "AI and social impact are close to my heart, and it's my honour to be contributing to my alma mater. I see a strong need for a dedicated Data Science and AI school focusing on foundational and applied research in these areas. With the advancements in science and technology, India holds immense potential and can be a world leader in AI and allied sciences. As a proud alumnus, IIT Madras holds a special place in my life, and I am gratified to be associated with them in this manner." said, Mr. Wadhwani. He further elaborated on the school's ambitious goals, encompassing world-class research, faculty expansion, and international collaborations.

Looking Forward, Together

As the reunion drew to a close, a chorus of pride and inspiration filled the place. Commenting on the occasion, Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean ACR, IITM said, “IIT Madras is what it is today largely because of its alumni. You learn, you earn, and you return. Today on this special occasion of the class reunion of '74, we saw evidence of all the three happening here, in one room.”

The alumni of 1974 left not only with rekindled memories but also with the assurance that their alma mater continues to thrive, embracing the future while cherishing its legacy. The event underscored the power of collaboration and forward-thinking, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of IIT Madras and beyond. This gathering marked the culmination of a momentous journey and ignited a shared enthusiasm for shaping a brighter future fueled by data science and AI.
