Dr. Ashik Mohamed
Dr. Ashik Mohamed, MBBS, MTech, PhD, MAMS, received Medical Degree (MBBS) from Madurai Medical College, Madurai, India, Master of Technology (MTech) in Medical Biotechnology from The Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India and Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Vision Science from The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia.
Dr. Mohamed headed the Ophthalmic Biophysics Laboratory, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad, India, that was dedicated to experimental microsurgery, biometric, mechanical and optical characterization of ocular tissues including the crystalline lens, and characterization of visual photosensitivity thresholds in human beings. He worked in close collaboration with the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida, USA, Brien Holden Vision Institute, Sydney, Australia, and Instituto de Óptica, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Madrid, Spain, and had been an invited Visiting Scholar to these organizations. He has more than a decade of experience in basic, clinical and translational research in Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences and has 164 peer-reviewed publications and a book chapter on the mechanobiology of the human eye to his credit.
His areas of interest include human crystalline lens biometry, mechanics, optics and ultrastructure. He was the Indian Principal Investigator for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded projects such as “Fiber Cell Junctions in Normal and Cataractous Lenses” and “Optics of the Growing Crystalline Lens”. His work has been extensively cited by peers in his field (>1600 citations till date with an i10-index of 52) and he serves as a Reviewer for reputed journals such as BMJ Case Reports, Cornea, European Journal of Ophthalmology, Experimental Eye Research, International Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Journal of Ophthalmology, Molecular Vision, Scientific Reports and Translational Vision Science and Technology.
In 2018, Dr. Mohamed is the recipient of the prestigious UNSW Young Alumni Award and his portrait (one among the 14 alumni worldwide) featured in the UNSW Science Facing Equality project: this involves visible display on campus of a broader range of role-models and thought leaders from successful alumni in various fields. In 2019, he was elected Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) in recognition of significant contribution to the advancement of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Mohamed is an active member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and is appointed to serve ARVO’s Global Members Committee for the period May 2018 – May 2021, Publications Committee for the period May 2022 – May 2025, and Professional Development and Education Committee for the period May 2023 – May 2026. In 2020-23, he has been selected as a mentor for the ARVO's Global Mentorship Program, the ARVO Women's Leadership Development Program and the ARVO Developing Country Eye Researcher Travel Fellowship program.
Currently, Dr. Mohamed is the Senior Editor of The Biomedical and Life Sciences Collection, Henry Stewart Talks Ltd, London, UK. He is honored to be the first Indian citizen appointed to this position.
