Description
We are a passionate team of undergraduate students from diverse disciplines - biotechnology, medical sciences, computational biology, and more - united by a common goal: pioneering the future of synthetic biology. As innovators and problem-solvers, we are committed to shaping a future where biology is as programmable as software, unlocking limitless possibilities for medicine and technology.
As we set out on our iGEM 2025 journey, we celebrate IIT Madras’ legacy of shaping the future of synthetic biology - a field poised to revolutionize the world just like AI. Since 2008, our team has consistently pushed the boundaries of genetic engineering and consistently delivered groundbreaking projects at iGEM, held at Paris annually, with disruptive solutions to global challenges.
The future isn’t just digital—it’s biological, and we’re leading the way.
About iGEM
The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Foundation is a prestigious synthetic biology competition . Since its inception in 2003 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) community has experienced remarkable growth.
As of 2024, over 400 international teams took part in the competition. This exponential growth underscores iGEM's pivotal role in advancing synthetic biology education and innovation on a global scale.
A Legacy of Excellence
IIT Madras has won six gold, five silver medals, iGEM Grand Jamboree since 2008. Beyond iGEM, we have also excelled at iGEM Indian League, iDEC, and GOGEC.
Our past projects included:
Our past projects included:
- Explored in-situ resource utilization on Martian soil by engineering bacteria and diatoms to synthesize essential medicinal compounds such as acetaminophen (paracetamol), advancing space medicine for long-term missions.
- Developed a database of 10+ host organisms, broadening the horizons of synthetic biology by enabling diverse chassis selection for optimized metabolic engineering and bioproduction.
- Engineered and optimized Lactococcus lactis as a novel synthetic biology chassis by constructing an RBS library to fine-tune gene expression, expanding its potential for biopharmaceuticals, food technology, and industrial biotechnology.
Why We Need Your Support
As we gear up for iGEM 2025, we face significant financial requirements, including laboratory research, team registration, travel, and participation in the Grand Jamboree - the global culmination of iGEM’s year-long efforts. Our estimated budget stands at ₹20 lakhs (USD 13000), covering project registration ,research and prototyping.
The Impact of Your Contributions
Your support fuels cutting-edge synthetic biology research, elevates IIT Madras’ global impact, drives industry-academia collaborations, and inspires future innovators through workshops, hackathons, and gamified learning. We invite our esteemed alumni and industry leaders to join us - your generous contributions will accelerate breakthroughs and empower the next generation of scientists and engineers to shape a better world.
Project Ideation for iGEM 2025
This year, we are exploring a CRISPR Based Epigenetic Toolkit for Precision Modulation of DNA Methylation in Gene Regulation. Our goal is to develop an AI-integrated system for precise, reversible gene regulation, with applications spanning metabolic disorders, cancer therapy, neurodegenerative diseases, and biomanufacturing.
Detailed Project proposal can be found here.
Let’s Make This Vision a Reality
Your generosity can help us make history at iGEM 2025. Together, let’s put IIT Madras on the global map for synthetic biology research and innovation.
We invite you to be part of our journey - to inspire, to innovate, and to give back to the institution that shaped us all.
With gratitude,
Team iGEM IIT Madras 2025
