Golden Jubilee Growth Fund

July 31, 2018 marks the closing of our “Golden Jubilee Growth Fund” and Aug 1, the launch of our 15-year “Diamond Jubilee Corpus Fund”.

We launched the GJGF with a target of Rs. 100 crores. I am very happy to report that we are closing the Fund with an accrual of Rs. 268 crores, and are launching the DJCF with a target of Rs. 3,500 crores ($ 500M), with a closure date of July 31, 2033, which will mark the beginning of our Platinum Jubilee year.

With your support, our “Next 15” will be our best yet, both in terms of fund-raising, and in institutional high-rise. Here are some specific objectives that can be supported by building a sizable corpus, and deploying annual returns in a targeted manner:

   Societal Impact:

   • Achieve technology breakthroughs that have momentous consequences for the nation
   • Deploy R & D interventions in water, energy, environment, healthcare, housing, transport and education to benefit society
   • Target scale and sustainability when developing solutions for India’s “Grand Challenges”
   • Ensure full dissemination of achievements to address perception/ reputation gaps

   Research Centres of Excellence:

   • Identify and nurture selected CoEs with potential to be among the world’s best in their domain, and able to attract funding from various sources
   • Recruit high-quality faculty, including foreigners, to achieve diversity in thought
   • Promote internationalization with institutional tie-up’s, faculty collaborations and student mobility
   • Ensure commercial realization via IP protection and technology transfer

   Teaching/Training:

   • High degree of flexibility in undergraduate curriculum, large number of interdisciplinary Masters’ programs as part of a dual-degree
   • Market-driven online M.Tech. programs and certification courses
   • Induction of foreign students into M.Tech. programs
   • Use of Teaching/ Learning Centre to improve pedagogy and learning outcomes

   Academic Research:

   • Upgrade path from Masters’ programs to Ph.D.
   • Induction of foreign students into M.S. and Ph.D. programs with scholarships on offer
   • Strong postdoctoral research programs with good career prospects
   • Central Instrument Facility to avoid logjams in sample analysis

   Industry Relations:

   • Leverage Research Park fully to maximize connectivity of R & D Centres to IIT Madras faculty

   • IP Office that handles Tech Transfer and commercialization aspects, including marketing
   • Induction of Professors of Practice to strengthen interface to industry

   Innovation & Entrepreneurship:

   • Enable larger fraction of students and faculty to pursue innovation & entrepreneurship
   • Provide connectivity to external incubators and innovation hubs
   • Involve large number of alumni as mentors and investors
   • Provide necessary on-campus infrastructure to coordinate innovation/ entrepreneurship-related activities

   Infrastructure:

   • Achieve a clean and modern ambience, preserving biodiversity and greenery
   • Build some iconic structures on campus that will enhance visitor experience
   • Provide sufficient accommodations on campus for faculty, students and Staff
   • Enable state-of-the-art facilities for classrooms and Research Centres

   Human Resources:

   • Recruit foreign faculty to enhance international character
   • Leverage Visiting Chairs and Adjunct Faculty to nucleate new areas of research
   • Provide incentives for junior, mid-level and senior faculty to continue to excel
   • Provide growth opportunities for non-academic Staff

   Internationalization:

   • Develop joint degree (Ph.D. & Masters’) programs with top 100 Universities in the world
   • Leverage membership in global University consortia to promote student and faculty exchanges
   • Offer summer/ winter research internships to foreign students
   • Participate strongly in GoI programs such as GIAN, VAJRA; develop Institute’s own programs modelled on these

   Alumni Relations/ Fund-Raising:

   • Establish tax-exempt Foundations in various geographies to facilitate donations
   • Target industry for CSR funds and Naming Rights, Foundations for sponsorships
   • Identify high-net-worth alumni, cultivate them for large contributions
   • Grow the alumni network through social media

   Perception:

   • Targeted publicizing of breakthrough technologies with deep social impact
   • Lecture tours for “star” faculty and Ph.D. scholars, and hosting of luminaries and opinion-makers on campus
   • Departmental Advisory Committees with substantial foreign participation
   • Annual Workshops on campus and abroad to disseminate latest achievements
