Journey of Leadership: Mr. Ramesh Srinivasan's Path from IIT Madras to Global Impact

Mr. Ramesh Srinivasan, a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Madras, has carved an inspiring journey spanning leadership, organizational transformation, and education. With a career that blends expertise in high-impact organizational change and a passion for education, Mr. Ramesh Srinivasan has emerged as a beacon of leadership and philanthropy. As he receives the Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA) 2025, Mr. Ramesh reflects on the role IIT Madras played in shaping his life and career, his commitment to giving back, and the lessons he has gathered along the way.

The Spark of a Dream
“It was my parents’ dream for me to join IIT,” Mr. Ramesh recalls with humility. Guided by a neighbor and mentor already studying at the IITM, Mr. Ramesh found inspiration and support to prepare for the rigorous entrance process. The dream materialized, and he joined the Computer Science program at IIT Madras, embarking on a transformative journey.

Cherished Memories of IIT Madras
Mr. Ramesh speaks fondly of his time at IIT Madras, where he balanced academic rigor with vibrant extracurricular activities. The Computer Science department, equipped with a Siemens mainframe boasting a then-impressive two-gigabyte storage, laid the foundation for his critical thinking and technical acumen.

Beyond academics, Mr. Ramesh excelled in cultural activities. Winning the Mardi Gras debate competition and serving as the Speaker of the Students Affairs Council stand out as highlights. “I learned the value of empathy and collaboration during my time at IIT Madras,” he reflects. Friendships forged during those years remain a source of support and joy to this day.

A Foundation for Leadership
Mr. Ramesh attributes much of his leadership journey to his time at IIT Madras. “It helped me become a critical thinker and a problem solver,” he says. Through academic challenges, debate competitions, and student governance, he developed skills in teamwork, empathy, and leadership that have guided him in his professional career.

A Legacy of Giving Back
Mr. Ramesh’s commitment to education and philanthropy is deeply personal. Growing up in a single-parent household with limited financial means, he benefited from India’s affordable education system, specifically the Merit Cum Means Scholarship at IIT Madras. “India has given me a lot,” he says. “I feel a deep obligation to give back.”

This sense of responsibility has inspired him to support initiatives such as NPTEL, the Leadership Development Program, and efforts to promote women leaders at IIT Madras. His involvement extends beyond IITM, with active roles in organizations like Akanksha and Teach for India, where he works to provide quality education to underprivileged children.

Inside-Out Leadership
As the global Dean of McKinsey’s Bower Forum, Mr. Ramesh has guided over 600 CEOs through leadership development programs. His bestselling book, The Journey of Leadership, encapsulates insights from these leaders and champions the concept of “inside-out leadership.”

“In today’s world, leaders need to reflect on their purpose,” he explains. “This approach—leading from within—helps inspire teams and institutions, especially in an era of rapid change.” The book has resonated widely, offering valuable lessons for leaders navigating the complexities of modern times.

A Message to the Next Generation
As he reflects on receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award, Mr. Ramesh remains humble and hopeful. “The world and India need the leadership, talent, creativity, and problem-solving of IIT Madras students,” he shares. His advice to current students is simple yet profound: “Make use of all the opportunities while on campus.”

From his formative years at IIT Madras to becoming a global leader and philanthropist, Mr. Ramesh Srinivasan’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of education, leadership, and giving back. His story continues to inspire, offering a roadmap for future generations to dream big and lead with purpose.
