When asked about his favorite spot on the IIT Madras campus, Mr. Raju vividly recalls the Taramani chai stall. “We used to go there every evening after dinner for a masala vada and chai. We solved many of the world’s problems there,” he reminisces with a smile.
Living in Ganga Hostel was another highlight, with its camaraderie and vibrant spirit. Mr. Raju fondly remembers leading Ganga to an inter-hostel championship victory. Back then he was part of Chennai’s premier basketball tournaments “Gerhard Fischer” and organizing the Kokila Rajaya basketball tournament for women. “Although we didn’t win, it was the best thing I did. It taught me teamwork, purpose, and the essence of entrepreneurship.”
Foundations of an Entrepreneurial Journey
Mr. Raju’s entrepreneurial spirit traces back to his father’s small-scale business, where he learned the fundamentals: sell, deliver, and collect. These principles shaped his later ventures, from his time at Cadbury’s to leading his first company, Vetri.
“Entrepreneurship doesn’t always mean being on your own. Even within organizations, you can find problems, solve them with innovative solutions, and inspire teams,” he says. His ability to motivate people, instill confidence, and foster a solution-oriented mindset became the hallmark of his leadership style.
Influential Mentors and Lessons
Professors like Prof. Anantharaman and Prof. NVC Swamy left indelible marks on Mr. Raju’s journey. From learning game theory to understanding people management, these interactions shaped his holistic perspective. As General Secretary of Sports, he led IIT Madras to win the inter-IIT meet and experienced firsthand the power of collaboration and strategic planning.
Mr. Raju credits his global exposure and mentors like Professor Noel Tichy of the University of Michigan and Ram Charan for sharpening his leadership philosophy. “A leader’s job is to teach, amplify vision, and align others to a clear purpose,” he emphasizes.
Values Beyond Awards
Despite numerous accolades, including being named among India’s top 75 entrepreneurs, Mr. Raju downplays their personal significance. “These recognitions are to inspire the next generation, not me. Success is getting up every morning with the same energy and commitment to solving problems.”
His advice to young entrepreneurs underscores this belief: focus on creating value, building resilience, and delivering on promises. “The entrepreneurial journey demands patience, commitment, and a readiness to pivot. Always generate cash, however small the amount, and keep adapting to change.”
A Legacy of Leadership
Mr. Raju’s leadership philosophy is grounded in humility and belief in others’ potential. “I truly believe every individual has a spark. Sometimes, that spark dims due to life’s challenges. A smile, a bit of hope, and guidance can reignite it.”
Even in challenging times, Mr. Raju’s resilience has been a beacon. He recounts a pivotal moment when his company faced a cash crunch, yet his unwavering focus on customer value helped navigate the crisis. “Tough times don’t last, but tough teams do,” he asserts.
Reflections on Networking and Giving
For Mr. Raju, networking is a cornerstone of success. Whether hosting reunions or connecting alumni, he highlights the power of camaraderie. “Networking comes first. When people give, whether small or big, it fosters a shared purpose and collective growth.”
Staying Grounded
Despite his remarkable achievements, Mr. Raju remains humble. “I’m tough with my employees, but they later say it was for their good. My goal is to help people perform at their best, to touch, teach, and transform lives.”
In his journey, Mr. Raju exemplifies the spirit of determination, innovation, and giving back. His insights are a guide for future leaders, reminding them that leadership is about inspiring others, staying grounded, and continuously striving for excellence.
