IITM-Deakin CoE in Advanced Materials and Manufacturing

Description

Your alma matter (Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME), IITM) has been growing significantly in recent years. 30 faculty members with their strength in various specializations have been driving this growth.

A few recent developments are:

    • Establishment of Centre of Excellence in Steel Technology (COEXIST) with the support of Rs. 35 Crores from Ministry of Steels.
    • Establishment of high resolution electron microscopy facility (TITAN) with a resolution of less than 1 Angstrom (the first such facility among IITs).
    • Setting up of a National Facility of for Atom Probe Tomography (costing about Rs. 40 crores) with 6 IITs (IITM, IITB, IITB, IITK, IITKGP and IITRPR) and ARCI Hyderabad as partners (contributing Rs. 2 crores each) and DST Nano Mission contributing Rs. 25 Crores). This national facility houses the first remotely operable Local Electrode Atom Probe (LEAP) of the world, that can be operated by the partners from their respective institutions to characterize materials at the atomic scale in 3D.
    • The first Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) lab among all IITs
    • In an innovative approach to reach out to industry, the department has got a new MTech Programme in Industrial Metallurgy through E-learning mode approved by the Senate. This programme is expected to start on 2 months. In this programme, the faculty teach the students (industry personnel) in the evening hours (4-7 PM) through video conference mode live and the student is given a maximum of 5 years to complete 10 MTech level courses and a project sitting at their respective industry premises.
About the appeal :

The department has a number of such PhD students with Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. Based on this ongoing collaboration with Deakin, a Centre of Excellence is being planned between IITM and Deakin on Advanced Materials and Manufacturing.

You will be glad to know a project between IITM (with me as Principal Investigator) IISc and GE on Indian side and Deakin, Monash and RMIT on "Advanced manufacturing of new high entropy alloys" has been sanctioned by AUSTRALIA-INDIA STRATEGIC RESEARCH FUND (AISRF), which is highly competitive funding agency.

The Centre of Excellence is to take this collaboration to greater heights. To the best of our knowledge this is the first bilateral CoE between the MME department of any IIT with another overseas institution.
