About the cause
Professor S Pushpavanam received his Bachelors from IIT Madras in 1984 and his Masters and PhD from the University of Florida, Gainesville USA in 1985 and 1989 respectively. After his PhD in 1989, he joined IIT Kanpur as an Assistant Professor. In 2000 he was appointed a full Professor in Chemical Engineering Department, IIT Madras. He served as Head of Sophisticated and Analytical Instrumentation Facility, IITM from 2007-2009 and Head of the Department from 2009-2012.
Professor is widely recognized for his research in Hydrodynamic Stability, Non-linear dynamics, Coal Gasification, Clean Energy, , Green engineering, Microfluidics, Lab on chip applications. His strong research publications have brought him international repute. He has strong research collaborations with Max Planck Institute for the Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems, Magdeburg,Germany and with University of Ghent Belgium. He is also popular amongst students and is well known in the student community for his excellence in teaching. His elective courses have attracted students from across departments.
Professor Pushpavanam is the recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship from USEFI under which he visited University of Florida in summer of 1996. He was awarded Rajarambapu National Award for the Best Engineering Faculty in 1999 by ISTE. In 2017, he received Prof. Y.B.G Varma Award for Excellence in Teaching in IIT Madras. His team won the Discovery Award sponsored by
NESTA U.K to incubate a start-up CAST. He has also won the Grand Challenges Exploration- India, Award 2018, sponsored by, the BILL and MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION. He has published more than a hundred research articles in reputed journals which are well cited. His strong collaborations with industry and his sponsored research have brought in research funding to the Institute to the tune of 14 crores.
Professor Pushpavanam has been a positive influence in the lives and careers of students at all levels Ph.d, Masters, and B. Tech . His pleasant demeanour and accessibility endeared him to many students. He has been a visionary and was responsible for changes in several fronts in the department i.e., creating a Department Computational Facility, setting up a centralized analytical instrumentation facility which houses sophisticated equipment. He also brought in changes in the curriculum at all levels making them more uptodate. He has proactively worked towards putting the department of Chemical Engineering IIT M on the global map . In recognition of his services to the Institute and the nation the Institute made him a Chair Professor. This chair at the moment is supported from Institute Funds.
We call upon all alumni who have interacted with Professor S Pushpavanam in classes and through research and have fond memories of the role he played in mentoring them to support the chair he occupies. An Institute Chair requires an endowment of Rs 65 Lakhs and the returns from the endowment will be used to sustain the chair..
