About the cause

Professor M.A. Parameswaran was born on 16 th January 1934 and joined IIT Madras in 1961 as lecturer and on 20 th December 1968 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has been appointed as Chief Design Engineer on 10 th August 1973 and designated as Professor on 10 th August 1975. He had been the Head of the Department of Mechanical

Engineering during 1983-86.

Professor Parameswaran was well-known for his dedication to teaching the mechanical design courses. He is also specialized in the area of material handling problems. With his excellent teaching, he endeared himself to a large number of students.

Professor Parameswaran visited West Germany as a visiting faculty from 26- 12-1978 to 31-12- 1979 and had won accolades for his excellence in teaching and designs. He had been a visiting Professor in the University of Technology, Malaysia and also visited National University, Singapore in 1993. Professor Parameswaran was involved in many consultancy projects with PSUs such as Neiveli Lignite Corporation. He had been instrumental to many a working design. He used to spend long hours in perfecting the designs and preparing design documents with utmost sincerity and finesse. He is known among his peers as a designer par excellence. Professor Parameswaran was President of IIT Madras Alumni Association in the 1990’s. He was instrumental to Alumni Silver Unions during that time. He was one of the first trustees for the IIT Madras Alumni Charitable Trust, formed in 1993.

He guided several students and authored three books. His books on Mechanical Design are of extreme value to the students as well as practitioners of Mechanical Engineering. They consist of two major activities-ideas generation which is essentially a creative activity and design engineering that transforms the ideas into a physically realizable design. They also introduce the total process of designing an engineering product for manufacture. His books are a true reflection of his personality: a practical designer and a visionary of product design and manufacture.

How the money will be used

The endowment interest will be used to fund a salary increment for the awarded Professors for the Chair. The occupant of the Chair is Prof A. Ramesh
